Illustrated with forty tipped-in color plates mounted on beige cardstock, with captioned tissue-guards. Green cloth boards with gilt title, Falstaff runing after several comely lasses, and all amid floral design; gilt title to spine. Faded gilt top edge. Untrimmed fore- and bottom edges. Light rubbing to extremities; cloth frayed and a bit shelf-worn at top of spine. A crease to bottom of frpnt board, and corners lightly nudged. Pages supple to turn and gently age-tanned throughout. Illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860 – 1920) was born at Coleraine near Derry, Ireland. He is best known for his elaborate color paintings and pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie - and of course, William Shakespeare. Thomson inaugurated the Cranford School of Illustration in 1891.
