Around Christmas 1969, Author Latham Flanagan and his climbing partner Dale Moon set out on a short winter climb, embarking from the Tinmberline Lodge parking lot and were missing on the mountain for five days afterwards. "... The Eugene doctor and his climbing partner Dale Moon were missing on Mt. Hood for five days. They didn’t show. A search team took to Mt. Hood the next morning, three days after Christmas in 1970. Blizzard conditions eventually turned them back. The following day, the searchers tried again -- and had to retreat again. Howling winds and zero visibility caused the same result the day after that. Fifty years ago, the disappearance of the two climbers prompted a determined rescue operation, and news about the desperate effort spread across the country. “Fear mounted Thursday for the safety of two experienced Eugene mountain climbers missing since Sunday on 11,245-foot Mt. Hood as continued snowy weather stalled search parties,” the wire service United Press International reported on Dec. 30. “Blizzard conditions forced five teams consisting of 32 searchers back Wednesday and more snow was falling on the mountain Thursday.” The searchers didn’t know it, but the 32-year-old Moon and 34-year-old Flanagan were still alive, huddled in a snow cave they’d built on the south side of the mountain. Bad weather had hit the two men Sunday evening as they were making their way down from the summit..."
