Richly illustrated with tissue-guarded chromolithographic plates on heavy stock paper each depicting a grandiose estate of the county seat. Burgundy beveled cloth boards with elaborately decorated gilt and black design with armorial plate to fronts and spines. Decoration is stamped in blind to rear board. Publisher's gilt edges. Light rubbing to edges and corners. Bit of scuffing to front of Volume 1. Two title pages in each volume, one decorated in color. Unmarked, bright, colorful interiors. Very light and occasional spotting.

Francis Orpen Morris (1810 – 1893) was an Anglo-Irish clergyman, notable as "parson-naturalist" (ornithologist and entomologist) and as the author of many children's books and books on natural history and heritage buildings. He was a pioneer of the movement to protect birds from the plume trade and was a co-founder of the Plumage League. (from Wikipedia) Morris is the author of the descriptions of the estates presented in these volumes.
