From the introduction:
"We can find many indigenous designs in different parts of Afghanistan. There are excellent designs of superior quality which have been handed down to us by the skill of the people fo the past. Afghan artists studied nature and its wonders and worked successfully at representing them and their achievements have remained intact until the present day. Though some of these designs have been lost or ruined we have collected samples of those that remain to protect them as examples of the ancient arts and crafts of the country and to preserve them for appreciation in the future by the children in our schools. These designs are not only important in history, art and industry but also in education.

"To collect them we went to different places in Afghanistan such as KAbul, Chazni, Herat, KAndahar, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kunduz and elsewhere. We have travelled widely and more than tow thousand designs have been collected from the mosques, tombs, graves, shrines and other places. We have done this work to show our respect for the artists who created them and we hope that our efforts will, in turn, lead to greater appreciation of them. though it is in expensive task, to collect, record and print these designs, we have managed to carry out the work that we set ourselves and we hope that they will give pleasure to those who see them. some fo the designs which have been printed in this book were created 1,300 years ago.

"From these designs 248 have been selected to be used as art forms in industry and business. In conclusion we invite those who see and study this book to come ot the Academy for Teacher Educators in Kabul to see the records of these designs that we have made and to give us further encouragement and help in our efforts."
