Bound volume of six months of THE PHILISTINE: A PERIODICAL OF PROTEST, comprising six issues of this little (5 3/4 in. x 4 1/2 in.) magazine, self described thusly: "Printed Every Little While for The Society of The Philistines, and Published by Them Monthly. Subscriptions One Dollar Yearly. Single Copies Ten Cents." It is printed on beautiful paper, with different colored inks.
This particular volume was custom crafted in woven burlap over cloth. Some loss of burlap to left side of spine and bottom and top of spine.On the front free endpaper is written in Ink the owner's name (which also appears on a number of the issues within): "Bound by Miss Campbell, May 1901. Muncie, Ind.".
Laid in is a folded note from the Roycrofters in a lovely hand which appears to be Elbert Hubbard's own writing. He writes the owner's name: "To Clara M. Strong, and dates it Oct. 3, 1899. It reads: "Dear Friend: The remittance yhou kindly sent to pay dues in the American Academy of Immortals has been safely received, & your name is now properly enrolled (in colors) on the roster of Philistia. As promised, the Choice Literature will be sent you Every Little While. / With Fraternal Greetings, ever and / alway, Sincerely Yours, / The Roycrofters " (and date appears below this)
Published by Elbert Hubbard, the Philistine was a monthly (mostly) publication of literary and social commentary which ran from 1895 to 1915. Its operating, choice of topics, materials, graphics, layout, etc. reflected Elbert Hubbard's "outlier" philosophy, one concerned with ethics, values, a purposed life, full of beauty and supportive of the higher potential of human beings. Its circulation was more than 100,000. It was published by Hubbard's own shop in New York State.
