James Stamford Caldwell (1787 - 1858) wrote these essays on the virtues and values of reading and study for self improvement, dedicated to the Duke of Sutherland. Caldwell argues that reading is not just a source of knowledge but also a means of personal development and moral improvement. Essays discuss morality and ethics, the role of women, love, social duty, evidences of Christianity, death, and more. This book is considered one of the earliest works on home-based self-improvement.
The previous owner in 1847 was Captain Richard Bury Palliser (1797 - 1852) of Castle Warden, Kildare.
