John Melish (1771 – 1822) was a Scottish mapmaker who published some of the earliest maps of the United States. Melish made several trips to the United States, finally settling in Philadelphia in 1811. A year later, he published "Travels through the United States of America, in the years 1806 & 1807, and 1809, 1810, & 1811", described by historians as one of the most accurate depictions of the U.S. published at that time. In 1816, he created the first map of the United States extending to the Pacific Ocean.
