Orison Swett Marden(1848 to 1924) was the premier charismatic self-help "guru" of his era. After a childhood wherein he lost both parents by the age of 7 and was shuffled around to a series of placements as a "hired boy", Marden stumbled upon Samuel Smiles's book in the attic of one of his temporary "homes" entitled "Self-Help" by Samuel Smiles. The book changed his life. Later, Marden suffered an unbelievable loss when the 1500 pp. manuscript of his first book was destroyed in a terrible fire. But Marden refused to mope. He picked himself up, rented a cheap room on a train and rewrote it while reconstructing the entire manuscript "Pushing to the Front." "Pushing to the Front (1894) became the single greatest runaway classic in the history of personal development books at that time.
