"In the pre-Stonewall era before the advent of the gay rights movement, male nude photography was kept underground. Photographers feared police confiscation, harassment, and worse. This volume uncovers the work of ten different photographers produced during this suppressive period-images hidden away for a generation in private collections and closed archives. The majority have never been published.
"All of the images here convey the provocative sense of a maverick working beyond society's boundaries and creating his own idiosyncratic methods. But their styles vary greatly: gleaming muscle gods shot for physique magazines, sun-dappled young men captured in the woods, and artful high-glamour studio portraits. Restoring a lost chapter to the history of photography, Uncovered presents more than one hundred images that are sure to find appreciation among a new generation. Including work by these photographers: Antonio Arabia, John Shreeve, Barrington Earle Forbes, Robert Galster, Frederick Kovert, Plato, George Platt Lynes, Al Urban, Vulcan, and Don Whitman."
