Masniello [Thommaso Anielo] was an Italian fisherman in Naples who led a revolt over an increase in taxes imposed by the ruling Spanish Viceroy. He led a mob of over 1,000 citizens and took over the City in this short lived seven-day uprising. Both parts of the history are contained in this volume and were originally published separately.
A lot of old (mid-18th century) writing with ownership signatures of Hugh Jenkins, poems, doodles, etc. to endpapers; Mr. Jenkins apparently purchased the book already as an old book, for. he dated his notation of purchase place (Yarmouth). The populist uprising in Naples against the aristocracy was regarded as truly amazing: 'though it is a small volume, yet it contains as stupendous passages as ever happned on Earth since Discord first entered into the World.'.
