Gilt title on burgundy panel, and seven gilt bandlines to rebacked spine. Original spine laid down. Scars to corners of boards (book was once half calf). Previous owner's name to top of title page ("Thos. Findlay, Esquire Drummond" -- last character clipped in binder's trimming). Light stain -- possibly lamp oil -- to lower right corner of paper from title page through page 50. Laid paper pages are bright and supple. Very Good. Item #81069
Comte d'Estrades (1607-1686) was a French military leader and diplomat / ambassador -- one of Louis XIV's "ablest diplomats [who] served with distinction in the Low Countries during the Thirty Years' War, conducted a famous defense of Dunkirk (1651-2), and took part in later campaigns in Catalonia (1655); Italy (1657); and Holland (1672).
