Colley Cibber (1671-1757) was an English actor-manager, playwright and Poet Laureate of England. This colourful autobiography, An Apology for the Life of Mr. Colley Cibber (1740), contains the best account of the theatre of his day and is an invaluable study of the art of acting as it was practiced by his contemporaries.
