Before James Dole bought 98% of L na i in 1922 to build the world's largest pineapple plantation, the island was mostly used for cattle ranching. The author's father, Charles Gay, along with his associates, acquired the vast majority of L na i's landholdings in 1901 to run the island's major cattle operations. Growing up intimately tied to the island's landscape, Lawrence K.
