A cornerstone in Irish local bibliography, Anderson's efforts was largely based on the extensive collection of Belfast-printed materials that he had passionately collected during the 1870s and 1880s. The publication details the region's literary and printing heritage from the arrival of the city's first presses, providing invaluable records of imprints, pamphlets, and books that shaped the cultural and intellectual landscape of Ulster.
John Anderson (1815–1905) was a woollen merchant, geologist, bibliographer, and local politician born near Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. He published papers on geology and was treasurer of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society and president of the Belfast Naturalists’ Field Club. He was a leading member of the Belfast Society for Promoting Knowledge (better known as the Linen Hall Library), acting as treasurer and (1873–1902) as secretary. Anderson's reputation rests on his Catalogue of early Belfast printed books, 1694–1830 (first published in 1886), a pioneering and enduring work influenced by the bibliographer Henry Bradshaw.
