After his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Africa to collect specimens for the Smithsonian's new Natural History Museum. The expedition collected around 11,400 animal specimens. Roosevelt and his outfit were said to have killed 4000 birds, 2000 reptiles and amphibians, 500 fish, and 4987 mammals.
