Olive tan cloth boards with gray cloth paste-on title labelwith title in black to spines. Publisher's gilt top-edge. Untrimmed fore-edge. Shelfwear to edges with several bumps to corners and along edges with some corners showing; a few closed tears to several spine ends. Title labels on spines are pealing around the edges. Past moisture damage to boards of Volumes 6 and 7 of The Book of a Thousand Nights, and to volumes 3 and 4 of The Supplemental Nights. Front and rear hinge repairs to several volumes. Subtitled "A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights Entertainments", The Book of a Thousand Nights is an English language translation of the Arabian Nights – a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age (8th 13th centuries) by the British explorer Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890)The electros from the "Burton Society" edition were acquired by the "Burton Club", and a highly successful series of editions began in 1903 (none of the volumes bear dates) and continued for decades. Many of these are uncredited and many are from other (some pre-Burton) editions of the Nights, some even having nothing to do with the Nights or even the Middle East. Penzer's bibliography lists nine different Burton Club editions, and starting about 1905 each edition was named after a city (Benares, Mecca, Medinah, Baghdad, Samara, and more), a new one appearing about every two years.
