Author John Barclay, born in 1582, was a Scottish writer and poet whose works left their mark on the literature of his time. "Argenis" is his most famous work, written in Latin and first published in 1621. This allegorical novel is often interpreted as a critique of the political intrigues and power struggles of 17th-century Europe, while also offering a reflection on human nature and the ideals of virtue and justice. Barclay combined elements of pastoral literature, political satire, and romance to create a unique and profoundly influential work.
